Cancer treatments

Explore cancer treatments and supportive care, and understand how your team builds a plan around your diagnosis, health and priorities.

How treatment is chosen

Your team considers the cancer type, stage, pathology and relevant biomarkers, together with previous treatment, other health conditions and what matters to you. A plan may combine more than one type of treatment.

Where appropriate, your diagnosis and treatment options are discussed at a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, also called a tumour board. Specialists such as medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists review the findings together and recommend treatment options and their sequence. Your treating doctor then discusses these recommendations with you, including the benefits, risks and your preferences, before you agree on a plan.
